Things to Do
22 Avenida Magallanes sits on the edge of a heavily wooded area which has many sandy cycle ways and access to the coastal cycle route is nearby. These lead to further cycle routes which criss cross the area. Organised Quad bike trips are organised into this beautiful area.
Golf is clearly one of the major attractions in this area, the house situated on the 15th green of the wooded parkland Nuevo Portils 18 Hole course. 2 miles away in El Rompido is the El Rompido Golf Hotel which has two 18 hole championship Golf Courses famous for staging the Mail on Sunday Club Championships each December. Spains oldest Golf Course, Bella Vista is ten minutes at Alaraque and the courses of Isla Cristina and Islantilia are half an hour away. There are a host of superb local restaurants to choose from where you can sample regional cuisine which centres on fresh, local ingredients, with fish dishes available in coastal provinces and the finest meat dishes inland.
Try the local "tapas" - small portions of foods, both hot and cold, served in bars, bodegas and tascas to accompany a copa of fino (dry Spanish Sherry) or draught beer. You can enjoy tapas in most bars before the lunch hour (in Spain this is very late - tapas at 1 pm, lunch at 2 pm or after), and again before dinner (8-9 pm, with dinner later yet).
The region is also famous for its wine made with Zalema, the indigenous white grape of the region. Many of the local wineries are open all year round for wine-tasting and are well worth a visit.
